About Upstate Rail Disconnect
What you will find here is a collection of reports, links, and articles aimed at providing accurate information and promoting a realistic outlook about the future of rail in Humboldt County.
It has been almost 20 years since freight rail has operated in Humboldt County. Some see the resurrection of a railroad as imminent. Whether it is to transport containers from China to Chicago, coal or almonds to Asia, tourists around the Bay, or passengers to San Francisco, there seems to be no shortage of hopes, dreams and ideas. Over the years, many studies have been done, all producing the same negative results and then quickly forgotten.
Where there is enough product or people to move, railroads are very efficient and environmentally superior. Someday when global economics, national transportation policies, and society’s priorities are dramatically different, trains could be the answer. Will that be in our lifetime?
